The Value In Quality
Quality should always be considered in every aspect of business. What is quality? Quality is a perception of superiority over another product or service that is gained via comparison. When looked at with a day-to-day business perspective, quality has a less tangible definition. Everyday judgements are made about your logo, brand, products, website, etc.—knowing what attributes the marketplace is looking for and how you stack up against those, is vital. Researching and understanding your market allows you to define what quality means for you, your business, and your clients.
Knowing what will set you apart from your competition is half the battle. Creating a culture that fosters quality will complete the picture. Selecting the right ideas, copywriters, designers, employees, logos, website designs can add or subtract from the quality of your business and its offerings. If you’re working with quality ingredients (ideas, direction, people, substitute what fits the situation) it’s harder to end up with a bad outcome. This is the classic “garbage in-garbage out” scenario or said in a more positive fashion “quality in-quality out.”
Quality is not something we notice on a daily basis but we always notice a change in it and always when it decreases. It’s important to approach decisions that affect quality from the point of view of your audience. How will decision X affect Y and what result will that have in your marketplace? This seems simple but often we make snap decisions that end up affecting the quality of a product or offering (and on a larger scale your brand) without evaluating just how large an impact it will have. Quality should be the first area considered when starting a project and the last area sacrificed.
Are all things of quality expensive? Quality would never be described as inexpensive but it does generate value. Of course quality has a cost and to be successful you have to find the right equation of quality and profit. However, the value generated by quality alone cannot be overstated. The smallest details of your messaging, branding, sales materials reveal to the marketplace the role quality has in your business and sets the expectations for your products and services. Everyone is always looking for value and providing something purely of a low-cost nature brings little value other than low-cost.
